Sweeping curves, twisting turns, and scenery that takes your breath away. Could you ask for more? If so Moab, Utah will deliver with arches, canyons, red rock formations, the Colorado River Gorge, petrogylphs, dinosaur tracks, a historical bridge site, and the LaSalMountains.

Home to three National Scenic Byways, one Scenic Backway, two National Parks and one State Park, Moab is a perfect destination for a motorcycling vacation or a great “extra day” stop on your way to the next rally.

Scenic Byway 128 along the Colorado River is the preferred route into Moab from Interstate 70. You start your journey across the open desert with a few sweeping curves, until you reach the Colorado river where considerably sharper turns will command your attention. The route crosses the mighty river near the historic Dewey Bridge site. Built in 1916 and used until 1986, this suspension bridge was on the National Register of Historic places and was open to foot traffic until it tragically burned down in the spring of 2008. A nearby rest area makes this a perfect stop to stretch your legs. Beyond the bridge, the byway continues to follow the Colorado River with more twists and turns, before giving way to a straight, but spectacularly scenic, section. Along this stretch, you will pass the majestic Fisher Towers and the famous Castle Rock, a finger-like spiral to the southwest, which was the location for many films and commercials, and can be seen just before the Castle Valley Junction.

Just past a ranch used in many John Wayne movies, you’ll want to focus on the road as it rejoins the river and the spectacular twisty curves return. Breath taking scenery is in abundance on this well-maintained paved two-lane road, that twist and turns as often as the river it follows through the steep canyons to highway 191 just 2 miles north of Moab. Definitely a “must do” route that can be worked into your itinerary, as an arrival or departure route, or just up to Dewey Bridge and back, for a quick fix. The tight curves can catch you off guard, and the beauty can be overwhelming, so watch out for on-coming traffic, as they may be distracted by the scenery and cross over. There are many turnouts along this 42-mile route offering beach access, restroom facilities, picnic tables and camping.

The LaSal Mountian Loop Road is a 60-mile route, which follows Scenic Byway 128 to the Castle Valley Junction. At this point a right turn has you entering a series of sweeping curves before opening up into Castle Valley where the Priest and Nuns rock formations and Castle Rock are visible. Still another right turn onto the LaSal Mountain Loop and you immediately find yourself ascending in a series of hairpin turns that will grab your attention and demand full concentration. Therefore, make sure you stop at the many view points to take in the breath-taking vistas as the vegetation changes from pinyon and jupiter trees to large pines and towering aspen. Shortly after passing the turnoff to Warner Lake Campground, the road winds down into Mill Creek Canyon, over bubbling brooks and through towering trees, before climbing again for the final descent past Ken’s Lake Recreation Area and into Moab. A great summer ride when you want to beat the heat for a few hours.

Dead Horse Point Scenic Byway on Utah Highway 313, just 9 miles North of Moab on Highway 191, takes you through 14 miles of incredible red rock canyon country, before forking off to Dead Horse Point State Park. After a series of hairpin curves as you begin to ascend the plateau, the road mellows out allowing you to appreciate the scenery. The view from Dead Horse Point, a large mesa connected by a narrow neck of land, is one of the most photographed scenic vistas in the world and well worth a few miles of straight and scenic touring.

After leaving the State Park, backtrack to Highway 313, hang a left, and head toward to the Island in the Sky District of Canyonland’s National Park. Within the park there are several scenic loops, all of which offer numerous sweeping curves and tight twisty turns, making this a favorite ride for locals. One word of caution, the scenery is so spectacular, it can be distracting and often, a seemingly straight stretch of road suddenly becomes a hard corner. Stop at the numerous overlooks, or stretch your legs on one of many short walking trails, to get a closer look at the spectacular vistas. Since this is a loop, you can experience the sheer joy of the ride on the way back.

While in Moab, another “must do” is the Arches National Park. Although the 22 mile road is not challenging, it is enjoyable and the scenery is so spectacular it really doesn’t matter. An initial climb through some interesting hairpin curves gives way to a fairly straight road with an occasional gentle sweeping curve. You will pass nature-sculpted rock formations such as Balanced Rock, Sheep Rock, Parade of the Elephants, which leave no doubt how they received their names. The park is full of the arches it is famous for, as well as petrified dunes and amazing rock pinnacles. Many of the arches are visible from the road or by taking a short hike. The amazing thing about this ride is that although you return on the same road you entered the park on, the views are totally different. Make it a point to visit Arches in the late afternoon, as a sunset ride on the return trip is magnificent. This is one you won’t forget, a truly amazing ride.

Out for a short after dinner ride? The Potash-Lower Colorado River Scenic Byway 279 takes you through a narrow canyon as you twist and turn with along the banks of the Colorado River through the Colorado River Portal. This scenic 17 mile route offers many opportunities to stretch your legs and enjoy sights such as Indian petroglyphs, dinosaur tracks, and arches. After passing Jug Handle Arch, the canyon walls open as you near the Moab Salt-Potash plant, above which the sheer cliffs of Dead Horse State Park can be seen. Taking this ride in the late afternoon rewards you with the sun setting on the red sandstone cliffs as you make the return trip.

With so many great rides to, from and in, Moab is a perfect destination to include on your next road trip.
Del Mar a costal community located twenty minutes north of Downtown San Diego, California

Del Mar is a city best navigated in the mindset of a local. A costal community located twenty minutes north of Downtown San Diego, Del Mar teems with restaurants, beaches, and activities beloved by residents who know where to be and when. This intimate guide to discovering Del Mar sheds insight on how to capitalize on everything this beach town has to offer.

1. The Beach, But Not Where You Think: The anchor of the Del Mar coastline is Powerhouse Park, which provides spectacular views, rolling grassy hills for picnics, and playgrounds for the little ones. But for a more authentic, private excursion to the shore, make like a local and head to the right or left of the park. This will allow you to experience total peace and relaxation, away from crowds. Here is where you can lay out your beach towel, soak up the rays, spot pods of dolphins, and watch the surf, all in your own space. Tips: After walking down to the sand, head left towards 15th street or right towards 20th street to discover your own oasis.

3. Oceanfront Dining: Enjoying front row seats to exquisite sunsets never goes out of style, and natives of Del Mar know this. Jake’s Del Mar and Poseidon Restaurant, two celebrated eateries, are situated on the shore’s edge, giving visitors the opportunity to experience a real Southern Californian sunset. Indulge in fresh seafood and delicious dishes while absorbing the view in casual and friendly environments. Around Happy Hour, both restaurants evolve into hubs of excitement, great for people watching. Tip: During summer, take the kids to the Del Mar Snack Shack after a day at the beach. There’s nothing quite like eating an ice cream cone in the sun.

3. Architecture and History: Integral to Del Mar is its rich history and beautiful design. Historic structures include the Canfield-Wright House, the Alvarado House, and the Olde Del Mar Train Station. Prominent architects involved in the development of Del Mar include John C. Austin, who later went on to design Los Angeles City Hall and the Griffith Observatory. Today, Del Mar’s not-to-be-missed design destinations include Stratford Square, a stunning example of English Tudor architecture and a community landmark, and the L’Auberge Hotel, designed by Barclay Butera. Tip: Book a reservation at L’Auberge far in advance of Race Season; rooms fill up fast! (18 July – 3 September 2013)

4. Animal Attractions: As a pet-friendly community, Del Mar hosts fun events for the area’s furry friends. Each September, the biggest dog surfing competition in the world takes place at Dog Beach during Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon. Owners and canines participate in 20-minute heats, showing off their best moves to earn a placement in the finals. Across the lagoon, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, people and pooches exercise for a cause in the Petco 5K9 Walk Run, held in January. Families will flock to Freeflight, an exotic bird sanctuary open to the public seven days a week. Get to know the facility’s resident Macaws, Cranes, Cockatoos, Parrots and more. Tip: Don’t forget to find a souvenir for your pet. Stop by Dexter’s Deli before your departure for premium health foods, toys, fashions, and supplies.

5. Award-Winning Cuisine: Seven Del Mar Village restaurants earned eight top titles in Ranch and Coast magazine’s Best Restaurant’s 2013 List. Pacifica, Kitchen 1540, Rendezvous, Board & Brew, Café Secret, Smashburger, and Prepkitchen were awarded highest honors in their respective categories, confirming Del Mar as a certifiable culinary destination and a hotspot to watch in San Diego’s burgeoning food scene. Tip: Ask for the secret sauce with your sandwich at Board and Brew, a favorite local hangout.

6. New Faces at the Del Mar Plaza: An exciting change at the Plaza has been the entrance of two new venues: Del Mar Chocolate Bar and Erik Skoldberg Gallery. The Chocolate Bar is a one-stop shop for gourmet chocolates, coffee, tea, gift baskets, pastries, and retail wines and champagnes. The confectionary and its adjacent patio are located on the second level, and boast unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean. The newest member to join the Plaza family is Erik Skoldberg, a San Diego-bred painter whose work portrays passion, movement, and vivid color combinations. Skoldberg’s gallery displays the artist’s impressive portfolio, a collection of modern, contemporary, and colorful pieces designed to uplift visitors’ moods. Tip: The Plaza’s ocean view deck, which is just outside the gallery on the third level, is the perfect place to enjoy sunset cocktails and a savory chocolate treat.

7. Summer Concerts: In 2001, singer Jack Johnson put Del Mar on the musical map after his performance at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Since then, well-known acts like Billy Idol have performed during Del Mar’s Summer Concert Series. This year, twelve bands are scheduled to perform on the Seaside Stage, and tickets are free for fans attending the races. For a more relaxed, family-friendly venue, set up lawn chairs at Powerhouse Park during Del Mar Summer Twilight Concerts. These concerts are a Del Mar tradition, and provide families the opportunity to socialize, picnic, and listen to music together as the sun sets over the ocean. Tip: Clear the calendar for September 1st, when Del Mar Fairgrounds hosts Reggae Festival with Ziggy Marley plus Beer Fest.

8. The Race Track: Race season is arguably Del Mar’s most buzzed about moment. Both locals and visitors look forward to trying out their gambling hands and placing bets on the sport’s champion thoroughbreds. Whether taking a seat in the Turf Club or in the grand stands, the atmosphere swells with excitement, and a little competition. Hollywood legends and former patrons of the track include Bing Crosby, Jimmy Durante, and Lucy and Desi Arnez. Tip: Park at the racetrack and ride the new, free shuttle that will take guests to and from the track and the village of Del Mar. Enjoy ocean views, shopping, and dining before, during or after the races.

9. Spa and Wellness: Life can get hectic, so what better way to unwind than with a soothing treatment at one of Del Mar’s luxury spas? Spa L’Auberge serves as a sanctuary for those seeking pampering and rejuvenation. The spa menu features a diverse selection of treatments that utilize organic, vegan products, as well as exotic plant extracts. Enter a realm of relaxation at Place360, an integrated lifestyle center offering acupuncture, homeopathy, nutrition services, skin care, and massages. Tip: Celebrate your birthday at Spa Namara, a peaceful spa retreat housed within Hotel Indigo that offers ocean views. Show your ID during your birthday month to receive a complimentary spa enhancement with any 50-minute service, or book a spa party with friends to receive special pricing.

10. Outdoor Recreation: Del Mar is an ideal setting for outdoor activities. Sign up for a surf lesson during summer at Surf Sessions, which offers private lessons, day camps, overnight camps, and weekend clinics. Boards and suits can be rented from Rusty Surfboards Del Mar. After the water, join a game of beach volleyball, take a tennis lesson at Surf and Turf Tennis Club, or embark on a scenic hike up Torrey Pines State Reserve. For a special adventure, take a hot air balloon ride with Skysurfer Balloon Company. Tip: Book the sunset balloon ride for incredible views of the coast and picturesque landscape.

Aspen's abundance of warm-weather pursuits pique nearly every passion, from extreme outdoor adventure to world class cultural pursuits

Aspen’s abundance of warm-weather pursuits pique nearly every passion, from extreme outdoor adventure to world class cultural pursuits, from Colorado’s best fly fishing, to indulgent spa offerings. Whether experiencing the rapids of the Roaring Fork River (running directly through the center of Aspen), to scaling the rock walls up Independence Pass, or biking on picturesque trails, there is an activity for everyone to savor Aspen’s stunning mountain scenery and experience “the good life.”

Autumn is one of the finest times to experience the splendour of the mountains. And Aspen, as a world-class year-round destination, elevates autumn far beyond mere leaf-peeping with a whole host of festivals, cultural events, outdoor activities, accommodation specials and dining deals that make it the perfect choice for a Mountain getaway.

Like summer, autumn is filled with blue skies and warm days perfect for hikes and bike rides, raft trips and paragliding adventures, and even lazy mornings perusing the ever-expanding Saturday Market. And because autumn in Aspen is still a bit of a secret, favourite trails and stretches of river are even less populated than summer. For those looking for a slightly less adventurous escape, sunset alfresco dining with brilliant autumn foliage backdrops abound at dozens of restaurants on Aspen’s walking malls and famed Restaurant Row. Or gallery-hop at the nearly 40 galleries that call the downtown core home. And Aspen’s shopping scene becomes even more accessible with shoulder-season deals that capture the imaginations of even the most discerning shopper.

The spectacular gold hues of aspen trees in and surrounding the town are one of autumn’s greatest draws. Explore the colours on two wheels with a road bike up to the Maroon Bells or an adrenaline-pumping mountain bike ride on one of the dozens of mountain biking trails designed for beginners to advanced; by car with a trek up and over 12,096-foot Independence Pass; by air with a hot air balloon ride or paragliding off the summit of Aspen Mountain; and by water while stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking along the Roaring Fork River.

Prices in autumn are considerably more reasonable than summer, with hotel options ranging from $89(approximately £57) in one of Aspen’s more affordable lodges; two-bedroom suites (that sleeps up to six) starting at $329 (approximately £210) ; up to more luxurious rooms in Aspen’s premier hotels. To reserve a room, visit Stay Aspen Snowmass, Aspen’s central reservations agency.

Photo: Mike Gallagher ,Co.CEO & Founder, City Pass Inc. talking to Elzbieta Pawelek, winner of the best IPW Host City (Los Angeles) Article

Las Vegas — Four international travel journalists captured top honors in the 2013 IPW Travel Writing Awards competition. The winners were announced on 10 June 2013 during a media reception at the IPW convention in Las Vegas. The U.S. Travel Association, which coordinates the awards, received more than 200 contest entries from journalists representing nearly 60 countries. The honors were awarded as follows:

Best IPW Host City (Los Angeles) Article — Elzbieta Pawelek of VIVA! Magazine, a national bi-weekly consumer magazine in Poland, took top honors in this category. Her story, Jak zdobyć Hollywood? (“How to get Hollywood”), takes readers on a past and present tour of the most famous place under the sun: Hollywood.

Best U.S. Travel Destination Article — Due to the high number of excellent entries received this year, the judges selected two winners in this category. Freelance journalist and travel photographer Chris Coplans won for his story A century of great railway romance, which was published in The Independent, a daily newspaper based in London, United Kingdom. Coplans’ article chronicles and celebrates 100 years of history at New York City’s Grand Central Terminal, giving an appreciative nod to the meticulous restoration of the elegant 1913 Beaux Arts building.

Also winning in this category is Lieven Mathys, chief editor for Roularta Media Group in Belgium. His article, Everybody loves Johnny, highlights Nashville and appeared in De Zondag, one of the largest circulation Dutch-language newspapers in Belgium.

Best Trade Publication Article — Janice Strong, editor of Canadian Traveller magazine, was recognized in this category for her article The Real Hawaii. The story offers readers terrific tips on broadening their Hawaii experience beyond simply sunbathing and surfing. Highlighting several of Maui’s resorts, Strong focuses on activities that would immerse curious travelers in Hawaiian culture, traditions, music, food and customs.

During their evaluation of the entries, the judges looked for articles that featured original ideas and exceptional storytelling skills, as well as prose that would inspire readers to travel to the United States.

The IPW Travel Writing Awards competition is held annually. Each of the winning writers receives $1,000 and an award certificate. This year’s competition was sponsored by CityPASS, the company that offers discounted admission booklets for the top attractions in 11 North American destinations.

Change is coming to Iran

David McGuinness, founder and director of off-the-beaten-track tour specialists, Travel The Unknown, spent 25 days in Iran in October 2012. The company offers a range of cultural and hiking trips in Iran. Change is coming to Iran. At this stage it is difficult to say to what extent the election of Hassan Rouhani with the backing of Iran’s reformists will affect Iran’s relations with the West, or living conditions for Iran’s 75 million citizens, but there is a now a momentum to the sense of change I felt in the air last October when I travelled there with my girlfriend to set up our Iran tours.

Lonely Planet’s newest Iran guidebook had only come out in August 2012, but within only two months it described an old Iran, one that had since changed dramatically. The book explained that in Iran, and particularly since the failed Green Revolution in 2009, people were reluctant to talk politics, to the extent that they would remove the battery from their already switched off mobile phones before broaching the subject. Such was the apparent fear of being caught out. So it came as a surprise when a student, only a couple of days into our trip, approached us and immediately started talking about the Iranian government and political system in a very open and less than complimentary manner. And he was the first of many. People didn’t seem worried, or afraid, and the feeling that the regime is in its final throes was commonly expressed.

The protests in Tehran’s bazaars, amongst the people normally most supportive of the government, certainly shook the foundations of the Islamic Republic. The number of protestors alone threatened to tilt the balance of power against the regime and it seemed this fact wasn’t lost on the street. Previous economic issues have caused the government to back down, for example, in previous attempts to increase the price of petrol which is very heavily subsidised. Clearly the regime, though perhaps not removable at the ballot box, are still susceptible to public feeling and need to keep up some appearance of legitimacy to be seen to represent the people. The dramatic fall of the currency, which lost a quarter of its value in a single week while we were there, exposed the present instability of the economy, suffering under both Western sanctions and government mismanagement. The upcoming election I felt would be an opportunity for the Ayatollah to gently switch track without being seen to do anything of the sort. A rapprochement with the West, including hopefully a softer line on the nuclear issue, and some easing of sanctions as a result, would of course be just the natural result of a change in the democratically elected leader of the country. Evidence of a functioning democracy. Or so the narrative could be spun.

Yet Lonely Planet wasn’t wrong to prioritise “meeting the people” as the number one item on their highlights list. The warmth of the welcome, the helpfulness and the hospitality of Iranians, were quite remarkable. If they didn’t speak English they called their friend who did. If they didn’t know where something was they found someone who could help. Going the extra mile was the norm, and it was always done with a smile. The wonderful Iranian people, whether religious or secular, liberal or conservative, young or old, were kind, genuine, and an absolute pleasure to deal with. Even the taxi drivers were honest! This is not the picture that most people have when they think of Iranians, but the truth is the Iranian people are a real credit to themselves.

One of the local operators we work with in Iran is Cyrus. He is 73 of age and climbed Mount Damavand (5,610m in altitude) last year, and most years previous to this. I struggled to follow a man almost 40 years my senior as we navigated the busy streets of Tehran; he is a force of nature with a smiley, bubbly personality to match. His company handled about 300 travellers per day under the golden era of tourism under Ahmadinejad’s predecessor, the reformist, Mohammed Khatami. Today they handle about 300 in a year. Not that Cyrus is the type to complain.

Another memorable encounter on our trip was with Mortesa, our driver for the day’s journey between Shiraz and Yazd. Mortesa was a real character who had spent time in the United Arab Emirates and Sweden after the 1979 revolution. He was continually chatting, telling us jokes and anecdotes, and asking about our lives in London and our home countries. He told a fantastic story about the time Iran’s morality police caught him in a vehicle with a younger woman he was not related to. She was only a friend whom he was driving to visit her mother, but the morality police are not known for being the understanding type. Since she was sleeping Mortesa told them she was his niece. But they asked him to wake her and took her outside for questioning, just within view. He saw her say he was her husband so when the man returned he asked him, ‘Have you finished questioning my wife?’ Confused, the man said that Mortesa had previously claimed she was his niece. “Not at all, you must be tired”, he retorted. The man went back and asked something else to his “wife”, and then returned. “What TV do you have at home?”, he asked. Mortesa replied “Samsung”. “Thank you, you may go sir”. I can see Mortesa driving away with a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

I am hopeful that Cyrus, Mortesa and the tens of thousands of others who work in tourism in Iran will have a second golden era of tourism to look forward to.

The Arabian Travel Market 2013 staged in Dubai signalled more opportunity and growth for the region as it celebrated 20 years in business

The Arabian Travel Market 2013 staged in Dubai signalled more opportunity and growth for the region as it celebrated 20 years in business. Celebrating its 20th anniversary year, the continuing success of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) saw over 2,500 exhibitors from 87 countries. Within the region, the UAE, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia are the key drivers of tourism growth with a positive outlook for the industry as the respective governments use tourism as the major anchor for economic diversification.

According to Mark Walsh, Portfolio Director, Reed Travel Exhibitions, “The Middle East is the fastest growing region for tourism promoting both inbound and outbound tourism, with most countries represented. ATM is a reflection of what Dubai offers – dynamism and positivity, especially now when Dubai is bidding to host the World Expo 2020. “The Arabian Travel Market this year has attracted a 7% growth from Europe as well as an increased presence from North America under Brand USA, all targeting this high spend, family market.” Mark Walsh

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, tourism in the Emirates is growing significantly faster than the world GDP growth average, contributing an impressive 14% to the UAE economy in 2012 – compared to the global trend of 9% – and is expected to rise by 3.2% 2013. Industry investment is set to increase by an estimated 12% maximising on the ongoing expansion of its airline route networks.
In Saudi Arabia there is a drive towards the development of domestic tourism with 22.5 million residents seeking new experiences. Business tourism demand is growing for Riyadh, the capital city. Tourist arrivals are forecast to grow. According to Walsh, “Tourism is currently the country’s second largest industry and this has a huge significance for the economy as the US$80 billion worth of expansion in railways and roads comes to fruition in the next 10 years.”

In Bahrain the tourism mix covers multiple sectors from business travellers to leisure visitors as well as international sports fans attending the annual Formula 1 Grand Prix . Hotel groups are introducing new mid-level brands to the market, while a 26- room Wyndham Grand Manama is scheduled to open in Bahrain Bay by the end of 2013, followed by a 50-storey JW Marriott in 2016. Infrastructure developments include the 90-kilometre link between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, said to be at a cost of US$4.5 billion while the 40 kilometre causeway link to Qatar is likely to be finalised in time for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In Oman the government is investing US$39 million into the development of the Dhofar province. The capital, Salalah, is forecast to become a new tourism hotspot which will benefit by the new services to be launched in 2013 by both Qatar Airways and Oman Air. Plans for Port Sultan Qaboos’ transformation into a tourism and cruise ship precinct is expected to be completed while Muscat International Airport’s new multi-million dollar terminal is scheduled to open next year.

As host to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar is implementing its US$65 billion investment plan which includes over 85,000 new hotel rooms. The National Museum of Qatar, the new international airport and convention centre are all due to open in 2014. With Qatar Tourism Authority’s increased focus on education and entertainment to boost tourism, the country is emerging as a hotspot for the arts.
Commenting, Hend Zainal, Head of Marketing, Qatar Tourism Authority, “We are focussing on highlighting our cultural heritage through events such as the Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture, created by the Qatar Museum Authority and The British Council, in association with partners including leading arts and education institutions in both Qatar and the UK. A series of cultural events will take place this year in both countries as part of the Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture. This includes an exhibition at London’s V&A Museum entitled ‘Pearls’, a revised version of the exhibition which took place at Doha’s Museum of Islamic Art in 2010, which will run in London from 21st September 2013 to 19th January 2014. The culmination of the exciting year will be a new exhibition in Doha by leading British artist Damien Hirst, presented at the Al Riwaq Exhibition Center from 10th October 2013 to 30th January 2014. Each event has been specially selected to promote an awareness and appreciation of Qatari culture in the UK, and vice versa, emphasising the variety and creativity of both countries. We are now busy working with the UK trade to develop these cultural packages to showcase the character and personality of the country”.

The focus for Dubai is furthering the appeal as a year-round tourism destination and promoting its diverse calendar of events and activities. Plans are in place for a new tourism island off the Jumeirah coast, an Opera House and a modern art museum. With the opening of the A380 dedicated Concourse 1 at Dubai International Airport, capacity has been increased contributing to the Airport’s new status as the 2nd busiest in the world while Emirates and FlyDubai continue to increase routes and passenger numbers.
According to Ian Scott, Dubai Tourism, UK. “Growth has been in 5 star properties which are up 22% year on year. Business is back in numbers and revenues. Dubai has its confidence back and it’s an exciting time with better rates offering affordable promotions to further demonstrate the infrastructure, water parks, shopping malls, transportation facilities and climate controlled indoor entertainment to promote Dubai’s uniqueness as a family destination”.

Ras Al Khaimah’s plans to position itself as a nature-focused tourism destination are gaining momentum. By 2021, the emirate expects around 20% of its GDP to be generated by tourism –related activities.

IMG Worlds of Adventure
The IMG Worlds of Adventure, which will be the world’s largest temperature controlled indoor entertainment destination was unveiled at the show. This giant facility will comprise four themed zones over 1.5 million sq feet designed to attract 20,000 visitors per day.
Super Hero Icons such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk Thor and The Avengers, to name a few, will reside in the MARVEL Zone and will offer an interactive experience in an immersive character and themed environment. The Cartoon Network Zone will deliver a number of the world’s first themed attractions such as The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, Ben 10, as well as other branded experiences. The pre-historic kingdom of dinosaurs will be brought back to life in The Lost Valley Zone where there will be rides and attractions within this fully themed lost world. The vast IMG Entertainment Zone will offer unique leisure and fun concepts as well as retail outlets, dining facilities and interactive entertainment experiences.

VP Marketing of Illyas & Mustafa Galadari Group (IMG), Adam Alexander, commented “This new entertainment facility fills a gap for thrill seeking family entertainment which Dubai currently doesn’t have. It will be competitively priced, it’s conveniently positioned just 20minutes from the airport and its varied themes will appeal to most age groups” IMG Worlds of Adventure is located in Dubai’s City of Arabia which is a self-contained community

Hotel Update
Hilton Worldwide continue its bold expansion plans by introducing two of its leading luxury brands, Conrad Dubai and Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah, into the UAE for the first time. In addition, the company expects to open 13 DoubleTree by Hilton properties across the region within the next three years. During the first five months of 2013, Hilton Worldwide has signed 10 new deals in the Middle East, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kurdistan, and Bahrain, which is a new market for the group.

The newly launched urban hub chain Vida Hotels & Resorts has been designed for the young culture conscious upwardly mobile traveller and is to open in downtown Dubai. This first “understated cool” hotel will offer 156 rooms of modern luxury and equipped with state of the art technology and amenities. The new brand is part of the Emaar Hospitality Group portfolio which includesThe Address Hotels.
The Movenpick Hotels & Resorts brand currently operate 78 properties with the aim to have 100 open across the world by 2015 incorporating both leisure resorts and corporate business properties. Last year the company took over the 298-room upscale Red Sea property in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt and a first property in Ankara, Turkey. This five star boutique island resort will feature eight one-bedroom villas and two Enchanted Signature Villas.

Montenegro has been tipped by the bible of travel, Lonely Planet as on a fast track to tourism superstardom

Montenegro has been tipped by the bible of travel, Lonely Planet as on a fast track to tourism superstardom this year and beyond. It is easy to see why. Few small central European countries have made such an impact in the charm stakes. Combine a superb coastline with a mysterious wooded remote interior, add beautiful Venetian style elegant old towns, a few laid back affordable resorts, plus friendly people and you soon realize that Montenegro has many riches on offer..

Our tour bus crawls around impenetrable hairpin bends on a mountainous marathon, to be precise a 500km round day trip from the coast into the interior all in one day.. I must be mad but am persuaded to visit the famous Tara Canyon close to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. When you reach it…eventually…a spectacular rip in the earth, bisected by a crashing rive awaits. It is the second deepest canyon in the world after the famous Grand Canyon.

Back on the coast – if you have not yet visited, imagine a sort of Italian lakes meets Greek islands – rocky shoreline, emerald sea, forest clad islands dotted around the bay, stretched out from the balcony of my hotel aptly named’ Queen of Montenegro’.

Montenegro (meaning Black Mountain) is still a relatively new tourism kid on the block – an enticing reason to visit – along the Balkan Riviera but that is all changing fast. One of the top ten destinations of 2013 get there before they put up the prices and the place is over run. Down the coast at Porto Montenegro, whose luxury yacht marina and waterfront community with exclusive boutiques, expensive restaurants and luxury waterside properties hope to emulate Marbella’s Porto Banus the scale of this little country’s ongoing ambitions to create a jet set resort is evident. The elite tourism renaissance has drawn people like Puro group founder Mats Wahlstrom, whose name is associated with exclusive beach resorts in Spain and Portugal and who has created a high end yet cosy Beach club here. Modest by comparison adjacent Tivat is where you can find a pizza and beer for €8 at a pavement terrace along its pleasant promenade. If you stretch your neck and look to the right you can still view the gleaming super yachts moored at nearby Porto Montenegro .

Arrival in Montenegro from Ireland involves a one and a half hour transfer from Dubrovnik Airport to where direct flights from Dublin and Cork operate. My base for the next four days was the beach resort of Becici, less developed than nearby lively Budva, a €1,50 bus ride away. Budva old town a mini Dubrovnik jutting out into the Adriatic is charming and so accessible. It combines ancient ruins, a church with faded frescoes, the citadel and cobble stoned streets and squares, streets crammed with colorful boutiques and affordable restaurants within its fortified walls. The atmosphere here is so wonderfully chilled that you might fall asleep as I nearly did under the shade of a giant olive tree, basking in warm October sunshine, lulled, it must be said by a glass or two of excellent local Vranac red wine.

The absolute jewel in Montenegro’s crown is Kotor, about half an hour by taxi from Budva and well worth the journey with buses and tours also regularly ferrying tourists back and forth. The bay of Kotor, a spectacular fjord sets the scene and the elegant walled town much of it built by the Republic of Venice in the 15th century is car free and only just a little less impressive than Croatia’s Dubrovnik. Tucked away a few miles around the coast is Perast, a Baroque village, which could be some place in Italy, and is visited for its quirky pilgrimage island Our Lady of the Rock. The tiny island built on the wrecks of seized pirate and enemy ships is reached by boat taxi and is a short but lovely excursion (and a steal at €3 for a return ticket).

The Balkan Riviera enjoyed jet set status once upon a time when the likes of Elizabeth Taylor,Richard Burton, Marilyn Monroe and other former super stars made one of its famous beauty spots fashionable. A fortified fishing village, Sveti Stefan, separated from the mainland by a causeway appears so familiar but that is because it is one of the world’s most photographed beauty spots. The exclusive hotel retreat offers accommodation starting at €700 a night rising to €3,000 if you care to occupy the two story villa, complete with private swimming pool where Sophia Loren used to top up her tan and bathe. More recent guests include Tina Turner, Mel Gibson and Sylvestor Stallone and the German fashion model Claudia Schiffer.

Convinced that Claudia was in residence a frantic young German couple pleaded in vain to be allowed to briefly snoop around Sveti Stefan. I did manage to have a peek on the island, despite the best efforts of the burly security guards to keep me out. But the place was devoid of star dust, as far I could see. All was not lost though. Moving back up the coast for two nights in Dubrovnik – not to be missed, it has been lovingly restored after all the Balkan War bombardments. I had the good fortune to gatecrash a Game of Thrones closing party. I have not watched too many episodes of the blockbuster fantasy historical thriller in the past,(previous episodes have been filmed in Montenegro ,the new series is set in Dubrovnik featuring the usual blood and gore and steamy sex in medieval surroundings) But they were a friendly fun crowd making for a perfect finale to a memorable Balkan Riviera Odyssey.

How to get there
Flights: Aer Lingus, Dublin to Dubrovnik from march 31-October 26, 2013 ex Dublin every day except Tues and Sat www.aerlingus.com I flew Croatia airlines ex Cork on a 2 centre package ( 4 nights Becici and 2 nights Dubrovnik) with Concorde Travel www.concordetravel.ie Tel-(01)7759300. Their 2013 packages with flights and accommodation start from €420 pp, including tailor made holidays and two centre destinations, direct flights ex Dublin, Shannon, Cork, Knock and Belfast.

Accommodation: I stayed at the stylish 4 star Queen of Montenegro Hotel in Becici www.queenofmontenegro.com – a week from €774 pp sharing with B and B, including flights, transfers etc. in 2013. Award winning luxury resort hotel ,5 star Dubrovnik Palace, www.dubrovnikpalace.hr

Sites: Kotor. Explore cobbled alleyways and secluded piazzas with cafes and churches galore. Jaz beach, a horseshoe expanse of terracotta colored sand where tens of thousands watched Madonna in concert a couple of miles north of Budva.

An air of mystery abounds in frontier town Ulcinj on the border with Albania. Venture into the interior on a bus tour beyond the mountains to beautiful Lake Skadar or a wild national park.

The Food: Montenegro and Croatia embrace past history – Turkish, Italian and Greek, not to mention Austro Hungarian cuisine influences. Pizza, pasta, goulash, moussaka, rich traditional stews and grilled meats from the mountains. Under €30 with a bottle of wine will buy a dinner for two in Montenegro which thankfully has the Euro. Croatia is more expensive on all fronts, from excursions to eating out.
