Forget Dublin or New York this Paddy’s Day, the tiny island of Montserrat in the Caribbean is the place to be on the 17th March 2010.
Montserrat is nicknamed the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish descent of its inhabitants. The island fell under English control in 1632 when a group of Irish, suffering anti-Catholic violence in Nevis, arrived from Ireland as indentured servants. A failed slave uprising on 17th March 1798 led to Montserrat becoming one of only two places in the world that celebrates St Patrick’s Day as a public holiday, the other being Ireland.
Montserratians go just as crazy as the Irish on the 17th March 2010 to celebrate the honour of St. Patrick. Week-long celebrations include; parades featuring costumed revellers wearing green shamrocks, concerts with calypso, church services and dinners, and a special March 17th commemoration of an attempted slave revolt in 1768. You’ll find Guinness on tap in the bars, hints of Irish cookery in the national dish and lots of Irish surnames among the people.
