One of the most exciting annual events of the Madrid cultural calendar comes to the capital in September 2010: La noche en blanco. On Saturday 11 September 2010, the capital will overflow with a large number of simultaneous activities for its fifth year running. The best expressions of contemporary creation will flood the streets and will see the participation of hundreds of thousands of people.
For yet another year Madrid will bid farewell to summer with this event, which will showcase over 150 artistic acts in which over 200 institutions have participated. Visitors and locals will have 10 hours to enjoy performances, exhibitions and other outdoor activities.
Basurama has been invited to curate La noche en blanco’s fifth edition. Basurama is a group of young Madrid architects who have spent a decade developing projects committed to sustainability and the environment. They have studied the artistic possibilities of waste, society’s consumption and the relationship between city and city dwellers.
Basurama, in collaboration with over 10 artists and groups of their choice, will transform the main streets and squares of Madrid: from Gran Vía to Cibeles, through Plaza de España, Paseo del Prado and El Retiro Park. The theme for night’s packed programme of activities, which cater to all types of audiences, is “Game On!”, and it invites all present to reinvent its urban way of life and the way in which it interacts with the city.

And to complete the schedule we have, Programa Abierto, which will see cultural institutions organising their own activities or offering free entrance to the public; and Circuitos, alternative spaces within the city offering music, movie, literature, theatre and visual art shows.
Those interested in attending this edition can view all information about the event in the special section offered by esMADRID.com (www.esmadrid.com), the official City of Madrid tourist information website.
A brimming cultural agenda
As well as attending activities as part of this large cultural event, visitors can also round off their city stay by enjoying the other tourist and leisure attractions on offer in the capital.
On 9th September 2010 – two days before La noche en blanco – Madrid will be holding Fashion’s Night Out. The event is sponsored by Vogue Magazine and will see shops at Milla de Oro open until midnight. This month, the Madrid Milla de Oro shopping centre will unveil its new image thanks to the redesign of one of its main streets, Calle Serrano, and surrounding areas.
Exquisite cuisine, music and theatre shows, museum exhibitions along the Art Walk (Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and Reina Sofía Museums) are just some of the other activities you will find on offer in the unique cultural destination that is Madrid.
Quality hotels on offer
During the weekend of La noche en blanco, visitors can stay at any one of the many hotel establishments available in the capital. Madrid offers an excellent range of accommodation, comprising 242 hotels and 609 hostels (a total of 851 establishments capable of accommodating 76,289 people), with a great price/quality ratio.
