In a region that loves to splash the cash – Dubai bills itself as the Middle East’s shopping capital. And with some of the world’s biggest malls – you can see why. But even shoppers in the rich Gulf states aren’t immune from the downturn. More shop space is lying empty, retail rents are down shops are being forced to cut prices. So why then is one firm spending $3.5bn opening four new mega malls in the region? Ben Thompson, BBC Middle East reports from Dubai.
